New research suggests that having a positive outlook on life, such as being cheerful, optimistic and displaying gratitude, can actually protect this vital organ. The study found those who had a sense of well-being were at a 30 percent lower risk of developing heart disease, due in part to the ill health impacts of those prone to more negative emotions.
