Should diabetics eat gluten-free diets?
Gluten free diets can get a bad reputation when it comes to keeping a person healthy, especially due to the added sugars present in many gluten-free dishes.
Gluten is a protein that naturally occurs in some wheat, barley and rye products – commonly, cereals, bread, beer, pasta and baked goods. Usually, foods that contain gluten are safe for people with diabetes. But, many foods that have gluten also contain large amounts of sugars and carbohydrates, which can increase blood sugar levels.
For diabetics, it might be worthwhile considering cutting out foods with gluten from their diets. Many people who have Type 1 diabetes also have celiac disease, and should avoid all forms of gluten. Although studies have not shown that a gluten free diet is beneficial for preventing or managing Type 2 diabetes, some researchers suggest that it may reduce the risk of obesity.
When switching to a gluten free diet, it’s important to pay attention to the alternatives – as carbohydrate and fat content in gluten free food may be higher than foods that do contain gluten.
