Why Heart Health Matters For Everyone

February is American Heart Month, the perfect time to zoom in on your own heart health. Make the most of this month by taking time to reflect on what you’re doing to keep your heart healthy now, and what you can do in the future. You’ll have the benefit of knowing you’re not alone—many others across the country are also tuning into their heart health this February!

Reflect on how you keep your heart healthy with these questions:

  • What routines are you doing now to keep your heart healthy? Think back over the last week, month, and year. Recognizing the effort you’re already putting in gives you motivation to keep going.

  •  What parts of your heart health plan do you hope to improve? Everyone has areas in life that could use some improvements—try to find yours without being hard on yourself.

  • What single change to your regular routine would make the biggest difference for your heart health? There’s no right or wrong answer here. Think about guidance you’ve gotten from your doctor or a part of your lifestyle you’ve been meaning to work on.

There’s no better way to celebrate American Heart Month than to review your routines and decide where to focus. Taking care of your own heart health is what this month is all about.

Keep in mind that heart health is only important for men—it’s important for women, too.

That’s what Wear Red Day is for! On the first Friday of February, people across America put on red clothing or Red Dress pins to set the records straight: heart disease is not only a threat to men. It’s the top cause of death among women in America, above all forms of cancer.[1] Heart disease can affect anyone and there are things you can do to defend yourself and those you care about against it.

Here are some ways you can put your heart health in your own hands at your nearest Higi Station:

  • Take the heart risk test to learn your risk for heart disease.

  • Join the Health Guide, a self-guided journey powered by the American Heart Association to manage your blood pressure by building one heart-healthy habit at a time.

  • Get your BMI at a Higi Station. BMI is linked to your risk for heart disease – learn yours and get support to keep it in a healthy range.

  • Check your blood pressure. Your blood pressure numbers help you understand how your heart is doing.

  • Watch your health trends. Seeing if your blood pressure and weight numbers are going up or down over time helps you keep your heart and yourself healthy.
