Be Well This Summer: 5 Tips for Staying Healthy, Social, and Less Stressed
Here are a few tips for making healthy choices while enjoying summer gatherings.
Focus on your future self: Before heading to a barbeque or picnic, picture yourself there. There may only be high-calorie or other less-healthy options available. Ask yourself: what do I need to feel more comfortable and ready to make smart choices? You might plan to have a healthy meal before heading to the event so that you can focus less on the food. Or you could bring a healthy dish you can both share and enjoy.
Keep a refreshing beverage in-hand: Summer events can be hot, and it’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger. Not only can keeping a drink in-hand help you stay hydrated and avoid overeating, but it can also help you feel a part of the fun. Make a pitcher of ice water infused with citrus, cucumber, mint, or other healthy flavors. Even if you’re not eating some of the less-healthy options at the event, you can still participate by sharing and sipping a refreshing beverage.
Find a good spot for yourself: Rather than landing on whatever open spot you first see, be intentional about choosing where you sit or stand. There’s a reason children can be picky about where and with whom they sit — it’s because it can affect the whole experience! Try finding some distance from the food table to avoid unnecessary temptation or distraction. Look for a place with people who you think will respect your choices and not push food on you. If you don’t like where you’ve placed yourself, find a new spot. What matters most is that you feel comfortable and at ease.
Take breaks: When surrounded by people and activity, it can be hard to stay in touch with how you feel. Consider breaking away from the action occasionally to regroup. A quiet moment to yourself can be an opportunity to check in on how you’re doing and make sure you’re hydrated and comfortable.
Join in on active games: If it seems like everyone around you is indulging in food and drinks you’re choosing to skip, you may feel left out or stressed out. Keep an eye out for opportunities to stay focused on what you’re there for — to have fun with those around you! Social activities like volleyball, frisbee, or card games can be ways to have a good time.
By having a strategy and a simple plan, you don’t have to lose sight of your health goals or miss out on summer fun. Remember, socializing is part of a healthy lifestyle! Focus on making smart choices and staying in touch with how you feel during summer gatherings. [1]
